What is acupuncture used for?
Acupuncture is used for a wide variety of conditions. At our clinic acupuncture is usually used for pain relief and to promote healing. It can also be used for some visceral conditions, like indigestion. Some of the most common conditions treated with acupuncture in our office are:
- Low back pain, hip pain, sacroiliac pain
- Sciatica and peripheral nerve entrapments
- Headaches and sinus issues
- Mid back pain, shoulder blade pain
- Neck pain and whiplash
- Shoulder pain, rotator cuff tendinitis
- Elbow pain
- Wrist, hand, finger pain
- Knee pain
- Ankle and foot pain
- Others (carpal tunnel, fibromyalgia, addiction support, digestive support, etc.)
How does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture works by inserting needles into very specific spots in the affected structures. This stimulates the nervous system to release biochemical and pain mediators that reduce pain, relieve muscle tension, and speed up the healing process.
Is acupuncture safe?
Yes. Acupuncture is performed by a professional who has completed a credible program of over 200 hours. Acupuncture uses sterile disposable needles that are only a fraction of the hypodermic needle used to draw blood. You can fit 15 acupuncture needles inside the average diameter of one hypodermic needle. Usually the needles are inserted with no discomfort at all and the most common adverse reactions include minimal bruising and mild bleeding which is less than a shaving nick.
