Sarnia's Trusted Leader for Concussion Diagnosis & Management

Motus HEALTH is a certified clinic specializing in concussion diagnosis and management.

If you suspect you've suffered a concussion, it's crucial to seek medical attention promptly, as early care greatly improves the prognosis and recovery outcomes.

What to Expect

Before your appointment, we'll send you a few questionnaires to complete and email back to us. When you arrive, you'll fill out our forms, and our chiropractor will review your health and injury history, as well as discuss your symptoms. A physical exam will be performed, and a diagnosis, including the type of concussion, will be made.

Your doctor will then provide initial advice and guidance on the next steps, and if needed, additional testing will be done. You'll leave with a clear diagnosis, reassurance, and a detailed explanation of the recommended course of care.

The Choice is Yours

While any healthcare provider certified in concussion management can manage concussions, Dr. Erin White is CCMI certified: The leader in concussion education.

Dr. Erin White determines what kind of treatment is necessary, whether at home or in the clinic, after conducting a thorough assessment. Typical concussion symptoms include head pain, neck pain, dizziness, vertigo, nausea, memory issues, and loss of consciousness.

Concussions are treatable, and often result in a full recovery. The sooner attention and diagnosis happens, the less chance for further trouble. Erin spends considerable time discussing that topic, and doing concussion education talks.

It’s important to note that 50% of concussions in sports are not recognized or reported. Any concerns, even if no symptoms are evident, need to be assessed or addressed as soon as possible to avoid long-lasting issues.

So what exactly is a Concussion?

A concussion is a form of traumatic brain injury that happens when the brain moves rapidly within the skull due to a forceful impact to the head or body. This sudden movement disrupts the brain's chemical balance, reducing blood flow and causing temporary energy shortages in brain cells. Common symptoms can include loss of consciousness, headaches, head pressure, neck pain, nausea, dizziness, and balance issues.

How do I know it's a Concussion?

Our clinic assesses all five areas of potential concussion symptoms:

CERVICOGENIC

Cervicogenic issues can cause concussion symptoms because the neck and upper spine are closely connected to the brain's pain processing and sensory systems. After a concussion, muscle tension, joint dysfunction, or nerve irritation in the cervical spine can lead to headaches, neck pain, dizziness, and other symptoms that overlap with typical concussion effects, as these issues can interfere with how the brain processes signals from the neck and head.

VISUAL & VESTIBULAR

Visual and vestibular issues cause concussion symptoms because the brain's ability to process visual information and balance is often disrupted after a concussion. This can lead to symptoms like dizziness, blurred vision, difficulty focusing, and problems with coordination, as the brain struggles to integrate visual and balance signals properly.

METABOLIC / HORMONAL

Hormonal and metabolic issues can cause concussion symptoms because a concussion can disrupt the brain's normal chemical and hormonal balance. This may affect energy production, mood regulation, and other bodily functions, leading to symptoms like fatigue, headaches, irritability, and difficulty concentrating as the brain and body struggle to recover and maintain homeostasis.

PSYCHOLOGICAL

Psychological issues can cause concussion symptoms because the brain's emotional and cognitive centers may be affected by the injury. This can lead to symptoms like anxiety, depression, irritability, and trouble with focus or memory, as the concussion can disrupt the brain's ability to regulate emotions and cognitive functions properly.

AUTONOMIC DYSREGULATION

Autonomic issues can cause concussion symptoms because the autonomic nervous system, which controls functions like heart rate, blood pressure, and digestion, may become disrupted after a concussion. This disruption can lead to symptoms like dizziness, headaches, fatigue, and difficulty regulating body temperature, as the brain struggles to maintain normal autonomic functions following the injury.
